A Coachbuilding Town's Garage Floors

Epoxy flooring in Fleetwood has a fitting backstory. Fleetwood Metal Body was founded here on April 1, 1909, and built custom metal and wood bodies for Cadillac, Packard, Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz chassis. Fisher Body bought the company in 1925, and in 1931 it moved to Detroit as part of General Motors. The name lived on for decades on the Cadillac Fleetwood. Car people still live here, and the garage is often the room they care about most.

Floors for cars you are proud of

A collector car or a weekend project deserves a floor that shows it off and protects it. Two systems fit best:

  • Metallic epoxy: a poured, hand-worked finish with depth and movement, good for a display garage or a heated car barn.
  • Full-broadcast flake: a textured floor in a color blend that hides drips and dust and handles jacks and creepers.

Both get a clear topcoat that resists hot-tire pickup, gasoline and brake fluid. We grind the slab first so the coating bonds, and we fill cracks and joints so the floor stays smooth under a creeper.

The old body plant

The original Fleetwood Metal Body buildings at 69 South Franklin Street still stand. As of 2022 the remaining original buildings were being restored and converted into loft apartments. Old industrial concrete like that usually needs grinding, patching and leveling before any coating. We handle that kind of crack and floor repair on residential and commercial jobs.

Farm shops outside the borough

Fleetwood is surrounded by Richmond Township, and an Old Order Mennonite community has lived near the borough since 1949. The farm country around town has equipment sheds, shop buildings and milk houses with concrete floors. For a working shop we use our commercial and industrial floor epoxy: a thicker build that stands up to tractors, hydraulic fluid and pressure washing.

How long it takes and when to drive on it

Most two-car garages in Fleetwood take one to two days to install. Metallic floors can add time, because each layer is worked by hand. After the topcoat goes down, light foot traffic is usually fine within a day. Car traffic waits longer, depending on the products and the temperature. In an unheated garage in cold months, cure times stretch out, so we usually plan garage jobs between spring and fall. We write the expected walk-on and drive-on times into your quote.

What we look for on the estimate

On the first visit we measure the floor and check it for moisture, old sealers, paint, oil and cracks. We also look at how the slab drains toward the door, since a coating will not change the slope. Then we explain which system fits and why, and what repair the floor needs first.

Commercial floors in and near town

BARTA Route 22 carries workers past Fleetwood to the East Penn Manufacturing plant in Lyons, and the Norfolk Southern Reading Line runs right through the borough. Small businesses here range from storefronts to service shops. We coat retail floors, workshops and storage rooms with commercial epoxy that handles forklifts, carts and frequent cleaning.

Borough homes and basements

The borough had 1,731 housing units in 2020, and much of it was built out by the 1970s. Older basements here often have painted or patched floors. We test moisture, grind off what is loose and coat with basement floor epoxy suited to the slab.

Fleetwood Questions

Is metallic epoxy a good choice for a collector car garage?

It is a popular one. It looks deep and polished, and the clear topcoat resists hot tires and most automotive fluids. Flake is the more forgiving choice if the garage also works as a shop.

Can you coat a farm equipment shed outside Fleetwood?

Yes, if the slab is sound. We use a thicker commercial system on shop and equipment floors. Badly broken slabs need concrete work first, and we will tell you if that is the case.

Will a Fleetwood garage floor stand up to winter salt?

Yes. The clear topcoat keeps salt water on the surface so it can be squeegeed out. Rinsing the floor in spring keeps it looking clean.
