Old Hamburg Floors, Made New

Hamburg is one of the oldest towns in Berks County, and that shapes every epoxy flooring job we do here. Martin Kaercher Jr. laid out building lots in 1779. In 1798 Hamburg became the second town in the county with a post office, after Reading, and it was organized as a borough in 1837. The Hamburg Historic District is on the National Register of Historic Places. Many houses in the center of town have basements and outbuildings far older than any modern coating.

Old basements need repair first

A 19th-century basement floor is rarely flat or clean. We often find:

  • Thin concrete poured later over dirt or brick
  • Patches where pipes and drains were replaced
  • Layers of paint and old adhesive
  • Low spots where water has collected

We grind off loose material, fill cracks, and level low areas so the floor is solid. Then we coat it with basement floor epoxy. If part of the floor is too broken to save, we tell you before we quote, so you can decide on concrete work first.

Growth with the canal, rail and turnpike

The Centre Turnpike opened in 1812, and the Schuylkill Canal and railroads followed with stops in Hamburg. The population went from 560 in 1830 to 2,010 in 1880 and 3,637 by 1930. Much of the housing dates from those decades. Garages were added later, often detached and set at the back of the lot. Those slabs tend to be thin and cracked near the door. We repair them and install a flake garage coating that stands up to tires and salt.

Right on I-78

Interstate 78 and U.S. 22 pass through the borough, with Exit 30 at North 4th Street. Commuters and contractors bring winter road salt home every day. A clear, chemical-resistant topcoat keeps salt water from soaking in, so the floor rinses clean in spring.

Care for a coated floor

A coated floor is low-maintenance, but not no-maintenance. Sweep often, since grit acts like sandpaper under shoes. Rinse winter salt out of the garage in spring. Use a mild cleaner and a soft mop instead of harsh solvents. Put a mat where you step in from the yard. Followed regularly, those steps keep the topcoat looking good for years.

What the estimate covers

We measure every floor, test it for moisture, and look for old paint, sealers, oil and cracks. You get a written quote that lists the system, the prep, every repair and each coat. If we find something on install day that changes the scope, we write it up for your approval before doing it.

Across the river in West Hamburg

West Hamburg sits on the other bank of the Schuylkill in Tilden Township, and we coat floors there too. Homes close to the river on either side can have damper basement slabs. We test moisture before quoting and use a moisture-tolerant primer where the slab needs it. If water is coming in, we tell you it needs fixing first.

Shops and storefronts

The Reading Railroad Heritage Museum sits on South 3rd Street, and the borough has a mix of older storefronts and newer commercial buildings. For small businesses we install commercial floor epoxy that handles foot traffic, carts and cleaning, with lines or color zones if you need them.

Hamburg Questions

Can you coat the basement of a very old Hamburg house?

Often, yes. The floor usually needs grinding, patching and leveling first. We look at the whole slab and tell you what repair it needs before we price the coating.

Do I need approval in the historic district to coat a floor?

Floor coating is interior work. If your project also changes the outside of a building, check with the borough before that part begins.

My detached garage floor is cracked near the door. Is that a problem?

It is common on older slabs. We grind and fill stable cracks before coating. If the slab has dropped or keeps moving, it may need concrete work first, and we will tell you.
